Fun and Educational Earth Day Activities for Kids

It’s that amazing time of year when our planet gets its own day of recognition. However, if you ask me the Earth should be getting its flowers (pardon the joke) every day. As this day approaches, this is the perfect time to engage children in activities that promote environmental awareness and appreciation for our planet. From learning about recycling to exploring nature, there are countless ways to make Earth Day meaningful for kids. 

Plant a Garden

Encourage children to get their hands dirty by planting a garden. Whether it's a small herb garden on the windowsill or a vegetable patch in the backyard, gardening teaches kids about the importance of plants, ecosystems, and sustainable living. This can also be a fun activity that can keep them occupied for a few hours!

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Take kids on a nature scavenger hunt to explore the outdoors and discover the beauty of the environment. Create a list of items for them to find, such as leaves, rocks, flowers, and animal tracks, and watch as they become nature detectives. You can even find small things around the house to make them feel like detectives! An old hat, a magnifying glass that was probably part of some game no one’s seen in months, or even just a giving them a clipboard and then sending them out into the “wild.”

Set up stations for different types of recyclables, such as paper, plastic, and aluminum, and challenge kids to sort and recycle items as quickly as possible.
