February Planting Plans

As winter begins to slowly melt away, gardening enthusiasts eagerly await the opportunity to sow the seeds of a new season. February may still carry a chill, but it's a month brimming with possibilities for the green-thumbed. Whether you're a well-seasoned gardener or just starting, here's a guide on what to plant in February to set the stage for a thriving and vibrant garden.

Hardy Vegetables

February provides a window to start sowing hardy vegetables that can withstand lingering winter temperatures. Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and Swiss chard can be planted directly in the ground or containers. These resilient greens will appreciate the cool conditions and reward you with early harvests. Just imagine when they are finally ready for harvest and you make the best salad of the function!

Herbs

Herbs add flavor to your culinary adventures, and many can be started in February. Consider planting parsley, cilantro, chives, and dill. These herbs can be grown indoors or in a sheltered outdoor space, ensuring a fresh supply for your kitchen. We’ve all been there where you’re in the middle of making something, guacamole for instance and you have everything, but cilantro. There’s no time to run to the market and now you have cilantro-less guac. What if you had an ongoing supply though??

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables thrive in the cooler temperatures of February. Carrots, radishes, and beets can be sown directly into the soil. Choose a well-draining location with plenty of sunlight, and you'll be on your merry way to harvesting these delicious and nutritious crops. It’ll be so exciting when they start sprouting.

Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic are excellent choices for February planting. These aromatic additions to your garden can be started from bulbs or sets. Ensure they have well-draining soil and receive adequate sunlight for robust growth. You can truly never go wrong with these two. If we were a high school yearbook, they would for sure win Frick-and-Frack.

Spring Bulbs

Brighten up your garden with the promise of spring by planting bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. While the flowers won't bloom immediately, the anticipation of their colorful display will make the wait worthwhile. Just imagine with me how pretty these colors will look when you have your morning drink on a patio or porch come Spring.

Fruit Trees and Shrubs

If you've been dreaming of a backyard orchard, February is a good time to start planting fruit trees and shrubs. Consider varieties that are well-suited to your climate. Apples, pears, and blueberries are popular choices that can thrive when planted during this cool month. Remember that it’ll take a few years before they start supplying fruit, but you have to start somewhere!

Perennials

Perennials are the gift that keeps on giving. Planting them in February allows them to establish roots before the growing season kicks into high gear. Look for varieties that are well-adapted to your region and enjoy a burst of color year after year. Such plants would be lavender, daylily, milkweed, and iris. It’s like a firework of color in your garden!

Cold-Tolerant Flowers

Don't forget to add a touch of beauty to your garden with cold-tolerant flowers. Pansies, violas, and snapdragons can be planted in February, bringing early blooms and vibrant colors to your outdoor space. These plants are great for those who want to see at least a little pop of color to get out of the winter funk.

February may be a transition month, but it's filled with opportunities to get a head start on your garden. By planting a variety of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit-bearing plants, you're setting the foundation for a beautiful and plentiful garden. Embrace the rhythm of nature, and let your garden flourish as you ready the seeds of a spirited and thriving landscape. Happy planting!
